Hand Sewing
Siempre me ha gustado coser a mano. Desde hace muchos años dedico al
menos unos minutos cada día para jugar con el hilo y la aguja tratando
de mejorar lo que ya he hecho cientos de veces y también experimentar
con estilos nuevos de puntadas. Crecí
cosiendo y fué tan natural la manera en que me familiaricé con los
diferentes tipos de puntos, que nunca se me ocurrió que tuvieran
oficialmente un nombre. Me refería a ellos como "el punto de gotita",
"el punto para orillas", "el punto de bolita", "la puntada de carrerita"
y así por el estilo.
I
have always liked to sew by hand. For many years I have dedicated at
least a few minutes every day to play with thread and needle trying to
improve what I have done hundreds of times and also to experiment with
new styles of stitches. I
grew up sewing and it was so natural the way I became familiar with the
different types of stitches that I never thought they would have an
official name. I simply used to call them "the little drop stitch", "the
stitch for edges", "the little ball stitch", "the stitch of running"
and so on.
Ya pueden imaginarse la situación en que me encontré hace algunos años cuando decidí escribir tutoriales de costura. Fué cosa de invertir una buena cantidad de horas buscando y aprendiendo los nombres de las diferentes puntadas, tanto en inglés porque es la lengua oficial en el sitio donde radico, como también en español, mi lengua materna.
You can imagine the situation I found myself in a few years ago when I decided to write sewing tutorials. It was a matter of investing many hours searching and learning the names of the different types of stitches, both in English which is the official language in the place where I reside, and also in Spanish, my maternal language.

mis tutoriales incluyen una guía básica y más bien corta de los puntos
de costura que se usarán en el proyecto que tratan pues asumo que las personas que
adquieren mis patrones tienen cierta experiencia cosiendo a mano.
All
my tutorials include a basic and rather short guide of all the stitches
that will be used in a particular project assuming that the persons who
get my patterns have some level of experience in hand-stitching.
Pero ¿qué tal si alguien menos versado trata de hacer uno de mis proyectos?
¿Sería suficiente la breve explicación incluída? La verdad es que no
sería muy práctico dar una amplia descripción de los puntos utilizados
en el tutorial pues ya de por sí los pasos para hacer el diseño son por
lo regular extensos y detallados... resultaría en un tutorial
interminable! Así que para conciliar esta inquietud, empezaré hoy con
una serie de entradas en las que hablaré con más detalle acerca de el qué, cuándo y cómo de algunas de las puntadas que uso con más frecuencia en mis tutoriales. De este modo tendré un sitio a donde referir a quien sea que necesite esta información.
But
what if someone with limited hand-sewing skills wants to try one of my
projects? Would this brief stitching guide be enough? To add a detailed
explanation of each stitch to the already long and thorough description
of the project's steps would make for an endless tutorial. So to
reconcile this concern of mine, I will start today with a series of
entries to talk in more depth about the what, when and how of some of the stitches I use the most in my tutorials. This way I will have a place to refer to whoever is in need of this information.
