Little Angels

Este año he tenido tres posibles diseños navideños para tutoriales: un ángel, la Sra. Claus y un duende. Con el tiempo que queda para Navidad creo que sólo terminaré uno de ellos, con un poco de suerte quizá dos.
 
This year I had three possible Christmas designs for tutorials: an angel, Mrs. Claus and an elf. With the time left before Christmas I think I will be able to finish only one, with a little luck perhaps two.

Ya empecé el ángel en versión de niño y niña.
 
I have already started the angel in a boy/girl version.

Sólo necesito trabajar algunos detalles menores y terminar de escribir las instrucciones.
 
I just need to work some minor details and finish writing the instructions.

Me encanta como están quedando estos angelitos y espero tenerlos listos pronto.

I love the way these little angels are turning out and hope to have them ready soon.

Tres Gatos

Three Cats

Una entrada rapidita para decirles que he agregado un nuevo tutorial a la colección de Casa Magubako. Es acerca de cómo hacer unos atractivos gatitos en tres versiones diferentes.

A quick entry to let you know that I have added a new tutorial to the Casa Magubako's collection. It is about how to make these good looking little cats in three different versions.

El primero en la lista es un elegante francesito llamado François, tan serio y formal que hasta podría decirse que es medio estirado. François es por lo general muy callado, pero aun así siempre se ríe de las ocurrencias de sus dos amigos favoritos, Carmen y Spooky. 

First on the list is an elegant Frenchman named François, so serious and formal that some could find him a little stiff. He is usually very quiet although he always laughs at the occurrences of his two favorite friends, Carmen and Spooky.

Carmen es la divertida, risueña y relajada del grupo. Le encantan las flores y es muy femenina tanto en sus maneras como en su forma de vestir. 

Carmen is the fun, wiggly, happy-go-lucky girl of the group. She loves flowers and is very feminine both in her manners and in the way she presents herself. 

Spooky en cambio, es un poco tímido y despreocupado en su aparencia aunque no por eso deja de mostrar su gusto por lo oculto y misterioso. A Spooky le gusta soñar despierto y muy seguido se queda atrás mirando a la luna o disfrutando de lugares oscuros y tenebrosos. 

Spooky on the other hand, is a little shy and less aware of his appearance but still he often shows his taste for the unknown and mysterious. Spooky is a day-dreamer and more often than not stays behind staring at the moon or enjoying dark, somber places. 

François, Carmen y Spooky no podrían ser más diferentes pero es muy probable que esa sea la razón por la que disfrutan muchísimo los momentos que pasan juntos.

Bolsas de Regalo con Aplicación de Pastelito

Treat Bags with a Cupcake Appliqué

Hoy quiero compartirles un tutorial para hacer estas prácticas bolsas para regalo en fieltro. Las he diseñado con una aplicación de pastelito lo que las hace perfectas para una fiesta de cumpleaños. Sin embargo con sólo cambiar los colores y algunos de los detalles las bolsas podrían usarse en otras ocasiones también. Las bolsas miden aproximadamente 12.7 cm de ancho x 17.8 cm de largo (o 5" x 7"), pero los patrones puede alargarse o reducirse para que las bolsas sean del tamaño que las necesite. Estas bolsas son muy fáciles de hacer y son ideales para repartirlas llenas de dulces, pequeños juguetes, recuerdos o cualquier otro regalito con el que quiera agradecer a todos los asistentes a su fiesta por su compañía. Pero eso no es todo. ¿Qué tal si damos los dulces de Halloween dentro de estas bolsitas a los pequeños visitantes que tocan a la puerta? O quizá podríamos usarlas para “envolver” pequeños regalos de Navidad para nuestros familiares y amigos. En fin que podría seguir escribiendo largo y tendido acerca de los muchos usos de las bolsas pero por el momento iré directo al grano con el tutorial :)

Este es un proyecto de costura a mano pero puede usarse máquina de coser para uno de los últimos pasos como explicaré mas adelante. Empecemos...



Today I want to share with you a tutorial to make these handy gift bags in felt. I have designed them with a cupcake appliqué that makes them perfect for a birthday party. However by only changing colors and some of the details the bags could be used for other occasions as well. The bags measure approximately 5" wide x 7" long (or 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm), but the patterns can be enlarged or reduced to make the bags in a size the meets your needs. These bags are very easy to make and are great to give away filled with candy, small toys, souvenirs or any other little present to thank the guests to your party for attending. But that isn’t all. What about giving Halloween candy in these bags to the little ones knocking at the door? Or maybe we could use them to “wrap” little Christmas presents for our family and friends. I could go on and on writing about the many uses for these bags, but I will go straight to the point with the tutorial for now :)

This is a hand-sewing project but a sewing machine may be used for one of the last steps as I will explain later. Let’s get started...

MATERIALES

1. Fieltro en colores que vayan acordes con la ocasión. Por ejemplo use tonos de rosa si se trata de una fiesta para niña, naranja/morado/blanco/negro para hacer bolsas de Halloween etc.
2. Pegamento para fieltro (o pegamento blanco)
3. Hilos de bordar en colores similares a los fieltros
4. Hilo de algodón grueso en un color que contraste con el color de la base del pastelito y también en café oscuro para el tallo de la cereza (bolsas de cumpleaños), o en negro para las patas de la araña (bolsas de Halloween)
5. Material de relleno
6. Pieza de listón delgado de aproximadamente 45 cm de largo (también se puede usar cordón de yute, estambre grueso etc.)
7. Lápiz afilado (o lapicero), cinta adhesiva, tijeras
8. Aguja regular y aguja de ojo grande 
9. Perforadora de papel en círculo de 1/8" (3mm) de diámetro

MATERIALS

1. Felt in colors suitable for the occasion. For instance, use shades of pinks if the bags are for a girl's party, orange/purple/white/black for Halloween bags etc.
2. Felt glue (or white glue)
3. Embroidery floss matching the felts colors
4. Pearl cotton thread (# 5) in a color contrasting the color of the cupcake’s base and also in dark brown for the cherry’s stem (birthday bags) or black for the spider’s legs (Halloween bags)
5. Stuffing material
6. An 18" long piece of thin ribbon (or jute cord, thick yarn etc.)
7. Sharp pencil (or mechanical pencil), tape, scissors
8. Regular needle and a large-eye needle
9. A 1/8" circle paper punch

INSTRUCCIONES
1. Bajar e imprimir los patrones. Cortar alrededor de cada patrón dejando un pequeño margen, el corte no tiene que ser muy preciso.
2. Usar una aguja o alfiler para perforar las marcas de puntos en los patrones #1, #2 y #3. Perforar también el patrón #4 si hace el cupcake con la cereza. Use una pieza de cartón debajo de los patrones a perforar para facilitar su trabajo.
 
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Download and print the patterns. Cut around each pattern leaving a small margin, the cut doesn’t have to be that accurate.
2. Use a needle or a sewing pin to pierce the dot marks through patterns # 1, #2 and #3. Also pierce pattern #4 if making the cupcake with the cherry. Use a piece of cardboard under the patterns to be pierced to make your work easier.

3. Pegar cada patrón a los fieltros con cinta adhesiva teniendo cuidado de no cubrir las perforaciones. Marcar los fieltros a través de las perforaciones con el lápiz. 

3. Tape each pattern onto the felts being careful not to cover the pierced holes. Mark the felts through the holes with the pencil. 

4. Cortar las piezas de fieltro siguiendo las líneas de los patrones:
- patrón #1: 2 piezas
- patrones #2 y #3: 1 pieza de cada uno
- patrón #4: 1 pieza (bolsas de cumpleaños)
- patrón #5: 1 pieza (bolsas de Halloween)
- patrón #6: 2 piezas (bolsas de Navidad)
- patrón #7: 3 piezas (bolsas de Navidad)

4. Cut the felt pieces following each pattern’s lines:
- pattern #1: 2 pieces
- patterns #2 and #3: 1 piece each
- pattern #4: 1 piece (birthday bags)
- pattern #5: 1 piece (Halloween bags)
- pattern #6: 2 pieces (Christmas bags)
- pattern #7: 3 pieces (Christmas bags)

5. Usar la perforadora de papel para hacer una serie de orificios circulares sobre las marcas de lápiz en las dos piezas #1.

5. Use the paper punch to make a series of circle holes over the pencil marks through both pieces #1.

6. Aplicar una capa delgada de pegamento alrededor de cada orificio circular por el revés del fieltro (asumiendo que su fieltro tiene derecho y revés. Si éste no es el caso entonces no importa el lado en el que trabaje). Dejar secar completamente.

6. Apply a thin layer of glue around each circle hole at the back of the felt (assuming your felt has front and back sides. If this is not the case then it doesn’t matter which side you work on). Let dry completely.

7. Aplicar una pequeña cantidad de pegamento en la parte de atrás de la pieza de fieltro #2 (base del pastelito).

7. Apply a little amount of glue to the back side of felt piece #2 (cupcake's base). 

8. Pegar la base del pastelito al frente de una de las piezas #1 (al lado opuesto de donde aplicó el pegamento alrededor de las perforaciones). Usar el patrón #1 como referencia doblándolo vertical y horizontalmente para asegurarse que la base del pastelito quede a la altura deseada y en el centro.

8. Attach the cupcake's base to the front side of one of the pieces #1 (that would be the opposite side where you applied glue around the circle holes). Use pattern #1 as a placement reference folding it vertically and horizontally to make sure the cupcake's base is at the right height and well centered. 

9. Usando un hilo sencillo en el mismo color que el fieltro, coser una línea de puntos de bastilla alrededor de la base del pastelito. Mantener las puntadas cortas y uniformes. Enseguida usar la aguja de ojo grande con hilo de algodón grueso en color contrastante para coser 5 líneas de puntos atrás sobre la base del pastelito siguiendo las marcas de lápiz.
 
9. With a single thread in a matching color place a line of running stitches around the cupcake’s base. Keep the stitches short and even. Next, use the large-eyed needle with the pearl cotton thread in a contrasting color to place 5 lines of back stitches over the cupcake’s base following the pencil marks.

10. Acomodar la pieza #3 (betún) sobre la base del pastelito. Fijarla transitoriamente con puntos de hilván. Usar un hilo sencillo del mismo color del fieltro para hacer puntos de jareta vertical alrededor de la pieza de betún.
 
10. Place piece #3 (icing) over the cupcake's base piece. Secure it temporarily in place with basting stitches. Use a single thread in matching color to appliqué stitch around the icing piece. 

11. Aproximadamente a unos 2.5 o 3 cm del punto inicial, pare de coser por un momento para retirar los puntos de hilván y rellenar ligera y uniformemente la pieza de betún (sólo necesitará una mínima cantidad de material de relleno). Terminar de cerrar.  

11. Pause stitching about 2.5 to 3 cm (1" to 1.18") from the starting point and remove basting stitches. Stuff the icing piece very lightly and evenly (you will only need a tiny amount of filling material). Finish closing.  

12. Usar hilo doble en diferentes colores (de acuerdo con el tema de las bolsas) y coser un nudo francés de cuatro lazadas sobre cada marca de lápiz en la pieza de betún. Evitar hacer los nudos demasiado apretados, sólo lo suficiente para que se forme una pequeña depresión alrededor de cada nudo. 


12. Use a double thread in different colors (according to the theme of the bags) and make a four-loop French knot over each pencil mark on the icing piece. Avoid making the knots too tight, just enough to get a light indentation around each knot.

13. Bolsas de Halloween (con la araña):
a) Cortar 4 piezas de hilo de algodón grueso en color negro de aproximadamente 4 cm de largo. Usar una pequeña cantidad de pegamento para adherir cada trozo de hilo por el centro en el sitio donde pondremos la araña. 
b) Las 4 piezas deben cruzarse entre sí como se muestra en la foto y serán las "patas" de la araña. 
c) Colocar el cuerpo de la araña (pieza #5) sobre las patas, usando una o dos gotitas de pegamento para mantener la pieza en su sitio.  Dejar secar. 
d) Coser puntos de jareta vertical alrededor del cuerpo de la araña sin apretarlos demasiado.
e) Usando la perforadora de papel, cortar dos círculos de fieltro en un color que contraste con el negro de la araña (morado, amarillo, blanco etc). Recortar la orilla de los círculos si es necesario para que no se vean deshilachados. Pegar los círculos sobre el cuerpo de la araña para simular los ojos. 
f) Use un hilo doble en color negro para hacer un nudo francés de dos lazadas en el centro o parte baja de los círculos.

13. Halloween Bags (with a spider):
a) Cut 4 pieces of pearl cotton thread in black measuring about 4 cm (1.57") long. Use a small amount of glue to attach each thread piece by its center at the place where the spider will be. 
b) The 4 thread pieces should cross each other as shown in the picture and they will feature the spider's "legs".
c) Place the spider's body (piece #5) over the legs, using one or two little drops of glue to keep the piece in place. Let dry.
d) Appliqué stitch around the spider's body without tightening the stitches too much.
e) Use the paper punch to cut two felt circles in a color contrasting the black color of the spider (purple, yellow, white etc). Trim the circle edges if needed. Glue the circles over the spider's body to feature the eyes.
f) Use a double thread in black to make a 2-loop French knot at the center or lower part of the circles. 

14. Bolsas de Cumpleaños (con la cereza):
a) Aplicar un poco de pegamento en la parte de atrás de la cereza (pieza #4) y pegarla sobre la pieza de betún. Usar el patrón #1 como guía si es necesario. Dejar secar. 
b) Coser puntos de jareta vertical alrededor de la cereza sin apretarlos demasiado. 
c) Usar la aguja de ojo grande y el hilo de algodón grueso en café oscuro para bordar el tallo de la cereza de esta manera: 
  1)Traer la aguja de atrás hacia adelante a través de la marca de lápiz de la izquierda
  2)Regresar la aguja hacia atrás sobre la marca de lápiz de la derecha, sin apretar/halar el hilo todavía 
  3)Traer la aguja hacia el frente de nuevo en el punto central dirigiéndola hacia arriba 
  4)Halar el hilo hasta que quede como se muestra en la foto y cortar.


14. Birthday Bags (with a cherry): 
a) Apply little dots of glue to the back of the cherry (piece #4) and attach it to the icing piece. Use pattern #1 as a placement guide if needed. Let dry.  
b) Appliqué stitch around the cherry without tightening the stitches too much.
c) Use the large-eyed needle and the pearl cotton thread in dark brown to embroider the cherry's stem this way:
  1) Bring the needle from back to front through the left pencil mark
  2) Return the needle to the back through the right pencil mark, without tightening/pulling the thread yet
  3) Bring the needle to the front again through the central pencil mark, directing the needle upwards
  4) Pull the thread until you get the stem as shown in the picture and cut it off.

15. Bolsas de Navidad (con hojas de acebo):
a) Aplicar un poco de pegamento en la parte de atrás de las hojas (piezas #6) y pegarlas sobre la pieza de betún. Usar el patrón #1 como guía si es necesario. Dejar secar.
b) Usar un hilo doble en verde oscuro para hacer una puntada recta en el centro de cada hoja.  
c) Aplicar una mínima cantidad de pegamento en la parte de atrás de las piezas #7 y pegarlas en la base de las hojas. Dejar secar.
d) Usar un hilo doble en rojo oscuro para hacer un punto de cruz en cada pieza #7 como se muestra en la foto. 


15. Christmas Bags (with holly leaves):
a) Apply a little amount of glue to the back side of the leaves (pieces #6) and attach them over the icing piece. Use pattern #1 as a placement guide if needed. Let dry.
b) Use a double thread in dark green to place one straight stitch at the center of each leaf.
c) Apply a tiny amount of glue to the back side of pieces #7 and attach them at the base of the leaves. Let dry.
d) Use a double thread in a darker shade of red to place a cross stitch on each piece #7 as shown.

16. Cerrar la bolsa: Juntar las dos piezas #1 con los lados de revés juntos (el pegamento que se aplicó alrededor de las perforaciones debe quedar por dentro de la bolsa). Usar un hilo doble en el mismo color que el cuerpo de la bolsa para hacer puntos de festón del punto A al punto B como se muestra en la foto. Si desea ahorrar tiempo puede coser las bolsas a máquina haciendo puntos de zig-zag del punto A al punto B.

16. Closing the bag: Place both pieces #1 back side together (the glue applied around the punched circles should go inside the bag). Use a double thread in a matching color to blanket stitch from point A to point B as shown in the picture. If you want to save time closing the bag a sewing machine may be used instead. In this case, place a line of zig-zag stitches from point A to point B. 

17. Paso Opcional: Voltear la bolsa para que el fondo quede hacia arriba. Alinear una línea de costura lateral con la línea de costura del fondo por la esquina como se muestra en la foto. Doblar la punta de las esquina hacia dentro y fijarla con un punto doble a la línea de costura del fondo. Repetir en el otro lado. Esto formará la base de la bolsa.

17. Optional step: Flip the bag upside down. Working at the bottom, align the side and bottom stitch lines at the corner as shown in the picture. Fold the tip of the corner inside and stitch it to the bottom stitch line with a double stitch. Repeat on the other side. This will make a gusset for the bag.

18. Terminar la bolsa:
a) Pasar la pieza de listón o cordón a través de los orificios en la parte superior de la bolsa empezando en el centro de la parte de enfrente. 
B) Para que este paso sea más fácil, use la aguja de ojo grande enhebrada con el listón. 
c) Anudar los extremos del listón y cortar el exceso. 
d) Después de llenar la bolsa la cerraremos halando los extremos y haciendo un bonito moño.

18. Finishing the bag:
a) Thread the piece of ribbon or cord through the punched holes at the top of the bag starting at the center of the front side. 
b) To make this step easier, use the large-eye needle to thread the ribbon. 
c) Make a knot at the ribbon's ends and cut the excess. 
d) After you filled the bag you will close it by pulling the ends and tie them in a beautiful bow.
