Los puntos de bastilla (puntos adelante, de frunce etc.) son puntos básicos de costura muy parecidos a los puntos de hilván. Se usan para unir dos o más telas, para hacer fruncidos y también para coser una gran variedad de puntadas decorativas.
Running stitches are basic sewing stitches very similar to basting stitches. They are used to keep two or more layers of fabric together, to gather fabric and also to embroider a wide variety of decorative stitches.
Los puntos de bastilla se hacen de la misma manera que los de hilván, llevando la aguja y el hilo hacia adelante y atrás de la tela (o telas) hasta formar una línea de guiones. Estos puntos son por lo general permanentes y por lo tanto es recomendable usar un hilo de buena calidad, hacer los puntos de un tamaño similar y con el mismo espacio entre ellos. En este caso la apariencia es importante.
The running stitches are placed in the same way we do basting stitches, bringing the needle and thread to the front and back of the fabric(s) until a dashed line is formed. The running stitches are usually permanent and therefore it is better to use a good quality thread, to make the stitches in the same size and with an even space between them. In this case the aesthetic does matter.

How to..
1. Ensartar la aguja con el hilo de su preferencia y anudar el extremo más largo.
1. Thread the needle with the chosen thread and tie the longest end.
2. Insertar la aguja a través de la tela o telas en punto A, de atrás hacia adelante para que el nudo no se vea. En este caso estoy mostrando dos piezas de fieltro previamente hilvanadas.
2. Insert the needle through the fabric(s) at point A, from back to front so that the knot is left at the back side. In this case I am showing two layers of felt previously sewn together using basting stitches.
3. Regresar la aguja hacia atrás en punto B.
3. Return the needle to the back at point B.
4. Repetir hasta formar una línea de guiones uniforme, asegurándose de que los puntos sean del mismo tamaño y el espacio entre ellos sea similar.
4. Repeat until you get a uniform dashed line, making sure the stitches are of the same size and have an even space between them.
5. Una vez terminada la línea de costura, anudar y cortar el hilo en la parte de atrás de la tela (o telas).
5. Once you finished your line of stitches, tie the thread at the back side of the fabric(s) and cut it off.
6. Para terminar, retiramos las costuras provisionales (puntos de hilván) si es que se usaron y eso es todo.
6. To finish off, we remove the temporary stitches (basting stitches) in case they were used and that's all.
7. Cuando los puntos de bastilla se usan para fruncir tela, recomiendo hacer un par de líneas de costura paralelas primero y luego jalar los hilos hasta lograr el fruncido deseado. Por último anudamos los hilos para mantener el frunce.
7. When using the running stitches for gathering fabric, I suggest to place a couple of parallel lines of stitches first and then to pull the threads until the fabric gathers to the desired length. Finally we tie the threads to keep the gathering.
Los puntos de bastilla son de lo más versátiles cuando se usan como puntos decorativos. Simplemente con cambiar el largo de los puntos, el espacio entre ellos, el color del hilo etc, podemos obtener diferentes resultados. Por ejemplo, podemos coser 2 o más líneas de puntos lado a lado con hilos en diferentes colores. O ¿qué tal si cosemos una o más líneas de puntos de bastilla y ondulamos un hilo en diferente color a través de ellos? Se vería lindo ¿verdad? Cada variante posible ha recibido un nombre pero para fines prácticos no tiene caso aprenderlos. Basta con saber que con la humilde costura de bastilla se pueden lograr verdaderas obras de arte con ese toque mágico de "hecho a mano".
When we use the running stitches as decorative stitches the options are unlimited. Just by changing the size of the stitches, the space between them, the color of the thread etc, we will get different results. For instance, we can place 2 or more lines of stitches next to each other with threads in different colors. Or what about doing one or more lines of running stitches and waving a thread in a different color through the stitches? Wouldn't that look pretty? There is a name for each variation of stitches, but we don't have to learn them all. It is enough to know that by using these humble stitches we can achieve truly pieces of art with that magic touch of "handmade".
